【 摘 要 】
The objective of this paper is todocument the extent, and distribution of child, and adultmalnutrition in Guatemala; to analyze the relationshipbetween selected child, maternal, household and communitycharacteristics, and children's nutritional status;and, to outline the implications of the most importantfindings for nutritional policy. The prevalence of chronicmalnutrition among Guatemalan children in 2000, was thehighest in Latin America, and among the highest in theworld. The data show very strong socioeconomic, andgeographic inequality. The econometric analysis reveals astrong impact of income, and of inter-generational effects.Education of adults in the household, and the availabilityof infrastructure, are other important determinants ofchildren's growth attainment. Finally, even controllingfor income, and other household and communitycharacteristics, ethnicity remains an important determinantof child nutritional status. The study also reveals anincreasing prevalence of excess weights, and obesity amongchildren and adults. Over-nutrition tends to be higher amongindividuals living in urban areas, and among non-poor, andnon-indigenous households.
