【 摘 要 】
The authors study the impact of bankconcentration, regulations, and national institutions on thelikelihood of suffering a systemic banking crisis. Usingdata on 79 countries over the period 1980-97, they find thatcrises are less likely (1) in more concentrated bankingsystems, (2) in countries with fewer regulatory restrictionson bank competition and activities, and (3) in economieswith better institutions, that is, institutions thatencourage competition and support private property rights.
