【 摘 要 】
The authors use China's nationalhousehold surveys for rural and urban areas to measure andexplain the welfare impacts of the changes in goods andfactor prices attributed to WTO accession. Price changes areestimated separately using a general equilibrium model tocapture both direct and indirect effects of the initialtariff changes. The welfare impacts are first-orderapproximations based on a household model incorporatingown-production activities and are calibrated to thehousehold-level data imposing minimum aggregation. Theauthors find negligible impacts on inequality and poverty inthe aggregate. However, diverse impacts emerge acrosshousehold types and regions associated with heterogeneity inconsumption behavior and income sources, with possibleimplications for compensatory policy responses.
