【 摘 要 】
The collective approach to householdbehavior relaxes the restrictive features of the unitarymodel by specifying household welfare as a weightedcombination of the individuals' utilities. But theweights are assumed fixed or exogenous to the analysis. Theauthors extend the collective approach by proposing andestimating a framework where the weights are determined andsimultaneously estimated with the household outcomes. Theauthors present Nepalese evidence that suggests that awoman's share of household earnings understates her"power" in making household decisions. An increasein the woman's educational experience leads to a risein her bargaining power. The results also reveal someinteresting nonmonotonic relationships between awoman's "power" and the household'sexpenditure outcomes.
