【 摘 要 】
The author provides an econometricanalysis of health care utilization in Vietnam based onindividual and household level data from the 1997-98 VietnamLiving Standards Survey. The author focuses on the majorfeatures of health care utilization patterns, including thedeterminants of largely self-prescribed use ofpharmaceutical drugs, and the use of government hospitals, commune health centers, and private health facilities. Therole of income and health insurance is emphasized.Econometric models are estimated for use probability andfrequency of contact for all major categories of care, andfor individual and household medical expenditure.Econometric results reveal differential responses to incomechanges at different levels of income. Commune healthcenters and self-medication are normal goods at lower incomelevels but inferior goods at higher income levels. Theauthor discusses the policy implications of these results.
