【 摘 要 】

This report examines youth developmentin the Caribbean today. The objectives of the report arethreefold, it aims to 1) identify the risk and protectivefactor and determinats of youth behaviors and development,2) demonstrate that the negative behaviors of youth arecostly, not only to the youth themselves but to society as awhole, and 3) identifies key intervention points for youthdevelopment, taking into account identified risk andprotective factors for the Caribbean. For the purpose of thestudy, youth is defined as spanning the adolescent periodfrom 10 to 24 years of age. Youth or adolescent developmentthus refers to the physical, social, and emotional processesof maturation from childhood to adulthood, with biologicalprocesses riving the initiation of adolescence and socialfactors largely determining the initiation of adulthood. Thestudy uses an "ecological" framework todemonstrate the linkages between a) the under-lying risk andprotective factors of youth behaviors, b) youth outcomes, and c) subsequent adult outcomes. It is termed"ecological" because the framework shows therelationship between the individual adolescent and his orher environment. Risk factors are those factors thatincrease the likelihood of experiencing negative outcomes.Protective factors counterbalance the risk factors.
