【 摘 要 】

Since inception more than twenty fiveyears ago, the World Development Indicators (WDI) presentedstatistical information of the world, as seen by developmenteconomists, and, through a growing understanding of thedevelopment process, the WDI now encompasses over 500indicators, covering 152 countries. A larger picture ofpoverty trends and social welfare is now provided, as wellas the use of environmental resources, the performance ofthe public sector, and the integration of the globaleconomy. This 2003 edition, focuses on measuring developmentoutcomes, encouraged by the availability of internationallycomparable statistics. Thus, the set of specific, quantifiedtargets for reducing poverty, and achieving progress inhealth, education, and the use of environmental resourceshas been compiled within the framework of MillenniumDevelopment Goals, as adopted by the United Nations. Thereport comprises six chapters that provide an introduction,and statistical development information on: the world viewthrough key economic indicators; on people, reflecting thepopulation dynamics, labor force structure, employment,poverty incidence, and social indicators among others; onthe environment as it is affected by the different sectorinputs; on the economy at large, presenting growth patterns,the structure of trade, and financial and monetaryindicators; on states and markets, outlining private sectordevelopment, investment climate, business environment, stockmarkets, and financial efficiency; and, on global links,analyzing the integrated global economy, trade, anddevelopment assistance. The report acknowledges thecollective efforts of partners in development, among thevarious international and government agencies, and ofprivate and nongovernmental organizations.
