As the second book in a three-partseries entitled Voices of the Poor, "Crying out forChange" accounts for the voices from comparativefieldwork among twenty three countries. Throughparticipatory, and qualitative research methods, the bookpresents very directly, poor people's own voices, andthe realities of their lives. It outlines themultidimensional aspects of well-being, and how poor peoplesee it, highlighting that in material terms,"enough" is not a lot for a good life, and, analyzes social well-being, security, and freedom of choiceand action, in contrast to the "ill-being" aspectsof material absence, reflecting on the experiences ofhumiliation, shame, anguish. and grief. The struggle forlivelihoods is described through the scarcity of ruralproduction, the diversified cities' bondage, and, thelimited opportunities of life, and individual breakthroughschallenging their livelihoods. Further analysis reflect onthe inadequacy, isolation, and lack of access toinfrastructure; on the health aspects of mind and body; ongender relations in troubled subjugation; on socialexclusion; and, on the uncertainties for survival. Itfinally challenges the meaning of development, and of power, calling for change, from material poverty to adequate assetsand livelihoods, from exclusion to inclusion, organization, and empowerment.
