IFC has built up a hefty portfolio ofdebt and equity investments in leasing companies in emergingmarkets. Based on IFC's experience, the authors arguethat leasing is an effective instrument for financing smallfirms' investments in equipment --especially incountries with weak collateral laws or mostly new businessesthat lack historical financial statements.
