Eritrea is a country with richindigenous culture and traditional practices. It is oftendifficult to discern indigenous knowledge (IK) embedded incommunity practices, institutions, relationships, andrituals due to its tacit nature. Many countries haverecently recognized the threat of losing IK and are puttingtogether initiatives aimed at preservation andrevitalization of this valuable resource. In 1982, a groupof Eritreans launched a scheme to identify and documenttheir local knowledge. The initiative was conceived to becarried out in two phases: collection of IK information, anddetailed validation and analysis. The purpose was to studythe cultures and traditional practices of the ethnicnationalities and capture, categorize and document these forsubsequent preservation and publication. This Note describesthe process, analyzes the constraints and impact, anddiscusses the next steps.
