The purpose of this paper is to provideforward-looking recommendations for linking agriculture andnutrition by looking back over the 40 years since bothnutrition and rural development began at the Bank in 1973.This paper sets out to explore whether what is currentlybeing suggested has been attempted in the past; in whatcircumstances, with what sort of support or commitment, bywhat actors, and with what results. Throughout, the WorldBank is a case study set within the larger development aidarchitecture due to its role as one of the largest actors inagriculture and nutrition investments in developingcountries around the nutrition initially was housed in thePopulation department (1972-75), and then moved toAgriculture and Rural Development (1975-79). The initial motivation was to showcase the depth ofhistorical resources available in the World Bank GroupArchives, and to demonstrate how they can be used to informcurrent practice. Several lessons learned primarily from theWorld Bank experience are applicable to the Bank'scurrent commitment to nutrition-sensitive agriculture, aswell as to the development community at large, that istackling the same agenda.
