【 摘 要 】
Relying on contributions from theInternational Movement ATD Fourth World, this book dealswith questions such as: What does it mean to live inpoverty, and especially in extreme poverty? How can verypoor people be reached through development projects? How canwe assess whether projects succeed in changing the lives ofthe poorest individuals? In answering these questions, theemphasis is on exploring what type of knowledge is needed tofight extreme poverty. A key argument is that apart fromacademic knowledge, a concerted effort is needed to listento the knowledge of poor people themselves, as well as tothe knowledge of practitioners who are engaged with them ona daily basis to fight poverty. After the introductorychapter, the text of a speech by Joseph Wresinski (founderof the International Movement ATD Fourth World) at acongress of social scientists held at UNESCO, is reproduced. The next contribution is based on comments by theInternational Movement ATD Fourth World on the World Bank sWorld Development Report 2004 Making Services Work for PoorPeople. Thereafter, case studies are provided onparticipatory approaches to attacking extreme poverty inboth developing countries (Madagascar and Tanzania, as wellas Bolivia, Guatemala, and Peru) and developed countries(the United States and Belgium).
