【 摘 要 】
In 1959, shortly after the EuropeanEconomic Community was founded under the 1957 Treaty ofRome, Turkey applied for Associate Membership in the thensix-member common market. By 1963, a path for integratingthe economies of Turkey and the eventual European Union hadbeen mapped. As with many trade agreements, agricultureposed difficult political hurdles, which were never fullycleared, even as trade barriers to other sectors wereeventually removed and a Customs Union formed. This essaytraces the influences the Turkey-European Union economicinstitutions have had on agricultural policies and theagriculture sector. An applied general equilibrium frameworkis used to provide estimates of what including agricultureunder the Customs Union would mean for the sector and theeconomy. The paper also discusses the implications of fullyaligning Turkey's agricultural policies with theEuropean Union's Common Agricultural Policy, as wouldbe required under full membership.
