This note describes the careerpreferences of graduating medical and nursing students inUttar Pradesh, with special reference to incentives offeredfor and work attributes of employment opportunities in ruralareas. Results indicate that medical students prefer toconcentrate on their post-graduate education and are notinclined to work in rural areas while nursing students havea greater predilection to work in public rural settings. Thenote draws attention to the fact that it is a tougherchallenge to increase the supply of physicians in ruralareas as compared to nurses and incentives offered toprospective health workers will be more effective ill theform of incentive packages.
