The Gulf of Aqaba Environmental ActionPlan (GAEAP) represents for the Government of Israel a steptowards achieving the national environmental objectivesoutlined in its legislation. The proposed actions, bothcurative and preventive, will protect the Gulf's landand water interface and ensure conservation of naturalresources within a framework in which economic developmentcan take place. The Israeli GAEAP is a component of theTaba-Eliat-Aqaba-Macro Area (TEAM) project which issponsored by the European Union within the framework of theRegional Economic Development and Environment MultilateralWorking Groups of the Middle East Peace Process. The GAEAPimplements a strategy including the strengthening of thelocal capability for environmental protection, revision ofthe statutory master plans on the basis of a precisedetermination of carrying capacity of the natural resources,completion of the proposed declaration of additional marineand terrestrial natural reserves, and implementation ofenvironment-related projects, in particular for pollutioncontrol. The latter projects relate to marine pollution fromland- and marine-based sources, enhancing management ofprotected areas, implementing a monitoring and researchprogram, increasing public participation, and developingtrans-boundary cooperation.
