Private participation in electricityindustries has grown substantially since 1990, withelectricity becoming one of the leading infrastructuresectors in attracting private investment. Between 1990 and1997 the private sector took on the management, operations,rehabilitation, or construction risk of 534 electricityprojects, with total investments of US$131 billion. Theseprojects have been implemented under schemes ranging frommanagement contracts with or without investment commitmentsto divestitures to greenfield facilities underbuild-operate-transfer (BOT), or similar arrangements. ThisNote provides an overview of the patterns and trends inthese projects.
