Forikrom, a community of 6,000 people inthe Techiman District of Ghana, is located in an area ofopen grassland. The area once produced cocoa, but thepractice ended in 1983 after some fires. Furtherdeforestation resulted from inappropriate farming methods.Forikrom has now turned the corner to reforestation of itsenvironment, but the initiative did not succeed withoutsignificant cultural conflict and could have reached thelevel it has without the impetus for new solutions that theconflict produced. The most important consequences of theForikrom initiative have been: a) social comity and b) theemergence of an environmentally-conscious community thatserves as a model for other towns in the region.
