Agriculture has been a mainstay of theCambodian economy. It has seen significant growth throughoutthe 2000s and showed a significant resilience againstexternal shocks during the 2008-09 economic and financialcrises. Agribusiness enterprises do not operate in isolationfrom the rest of the economy. The state of production ofagricultural raw materials, the state of the financialsector, and the nature of the financial sector'sengagement with the real sector activities, as well asbroader issues that affect private sector development allimpact the development of the agribusiness sector. Thecurrent study seeks to analyze some of these linkages. Itfocuses specifically on the role the financial sector hasplayed in the growth and development of the agribusinesssector. The study builds on the existing analytical work onagricultural and small and medium enterprise (SME) financein Cambodia. The study was carried out in three majorphases. The first phase was to determine a methodology togather new information on linkages between agribusinessesand financial institutions. The second phase involved asurvey of financial institutions (banks, microfinanceinstitutions, and insurance companies) and 1,011agribusinesses in Cambodia. The third phase emphasizedanalyzing the data and compiling a report that highlightedthe key findings for the target audience. The reportprovides the broader context of the sector issues related toaccess to finance by agribusinesses, and review theavailable analytical work.
