【 摘 要 】
The role of agriculture in sustainabledevelopment and poverty reduction for the vast majority ofdeveloping countries cannot be overemphasized. Forty-fivepercent of the developing world's population lives inhouseholds involved in agriculture, and twenty-seven percentin smallholder households, and most depend on agriculturefor their livelihoods. The agricultural sector generates onaverage twenty-nine percent of gross domestic product (GDP),employs sixty-five percent of the labor force inagriculture-based countries, and is a key to generatingoverall growth. This book attempts to address thesequestions and challenges, by examining how agriculturalinnovation arises in four African countries, Ghana, Kenya,Tanzania, and Uganda, through agribusiness, public policies, and specific value chains for food staples, high valueproducts, and livestock. Determinants of innovation are notviewed individually but within the context of a complexagricultural innovation system (AIS) involving many actorsand interactions. The country reports are based onqualitative interviews with agribusiness representativesabout their experiences in this area. The synthesis chapterpreceding the country reports presents the main findings ofthe country reports, links common themes, and distillslessons learned.
