【 摘 要 】
This study reports on recent developmentand future potential for U.S.-based Guatemalan workerscross-border retail transfers to be more formal, cheaper,and disposed to the cross-sale of financial products andservices. It also presents the key features of remittancessenders, recipients, instruments, and intermediariesinvolved. The paper focuses on three areas: (a) the maincharacteristics of the Guatemalan migrants in the UnitedStates and the key drivers behind their decision to remitmoney and to choose an intermediary; (b) financialinfrastructure supporting U.S.-Guatemala remittancesprocessing, especially the role of technology, paymentsystems and innovations going forward, as avenues to helplower transaction costs, among others; and (c) the landscapeof workers remittances distribution in Guatemala, examinesthe characteristics of recipients and theevidence ofremittances impact, and analyzes the indications ofpotential for cross-sale of financial services to recipients.
