The organization, which is now calledthe International Land Coalition (ILC), was established onJanuary 1, 1996, on the recommendation of the conference onhunger and poverty convened by the International Fund forAgricultural Development (IFAD) in 1995. At first, theorganization was called the popular coalition to eradicatehunger and poverty. The ILC itself was formally constitutedand launched along with its new name in February 2003. Themission of the land coalition has been to be a globalalliance of intergovernmental, governmental and civilsociety organizations that worked together with rural poorpeople to increase their secure access to natural resources,especially land, and to enable them to participate directlyin policy formulation and decision-making processes thataffected their livelihood, at local, national, regional andinternational levels. From its inception through the end of2007, the ILC has mobilized $18.6 million in donations andpledges receivable from donors. The major contributors havebeen International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)(which has provided 48 percent of all resources), theNetherlands, the European Commission, Netherlands, the WorldBank, Italy, and Belgium. The World Bank was a foundingmember and provided a one-time financial contribution ofUS$1.5 million from its development grant facility in 1998.
