【 摘 要 】
This paper assembles novel data on theChilean wine industry to investigate the role of investmentsin knowledge capital on sales growth in domestic andinternational markets. The study uses archival datacollected from the Government of Chile to compile andcategorize public expenditures and programs supporting theChilean wine industry over the period of 1990-2012 intoinvestment in different types of knowledge capital. Thesespending categories are related to industry-level salesgrowth. The paper finds that the most important correlate isspending on research and development. The study also usesdata from a new survey of Chilean wine firms to captureinformation on firm-specific investments in knowledgecapital. The findings show that investments in collaborationcapital, in particular hiring foreign consultants, as wellas participation in international wine fairs are thestrongest correlates of growth in export sales, whilespending on aspects of branding (local advertising and branddesign) are the strongest correlates of domestic marketsales growth.
