【 摘 要 】
This book contributes to the empiricaland theoretical analysis of the performance of cities in aglobalizing world, bringing together a range of perspectiveson the policy implications for urban management. It providesguidance for policymakers on ways of capitalizing on theglobal economy that will make the most of the citiesresources and managerial infrastructure as well as guidinginvestment and policy for the future. The book providesexamples of how conflicts can be managed between individualand collective interests, such as the extensiveenvironmental and social consultation undertaken in theplanning and implementation of the Jamuna Bridge inBangladesh, which now joins cities that had never seen dailyconnection between people in markets. The authors presentempirical evidence that suggests that good governance andglobalization tend to improve city-level performance in boththe access to services as well as the quality of delivery ofservices which allows cities to translate global opportunityinto local value for their citizens. This research alsoraises difficult questions of causality: does moreglobalization cause better governance, or vice versa? Theauthors look particularly at African cities to examinesimilarities with and differences from cities elsewhere.Their research suggests that Africa faces the challenge ofimproving both the quality of the management of its citiesand their governance, so that they can offer services thatwill attract foreign investment while continuing to servethe needs of their residents and their regional economies.
