The forestry sector in Moldova facessignificant governance and sustainability challenges. Theinsufficient level of forest coverage in Moldova has aserious impact on environment and overall economic growth inthe country. The situation is exacerbated by the reportedlyintense pressure on forest resources exerted by the humanfactor. Illegal logging and grazing are considered assignificant factors that contribute to forest loss. There isa lack of public demand for sustainable forest management.Social accountability (SA) has been recognized as aneffective mechanism to improve government service deliveryand enhance developmental impact. SA mechanisms entail abroad range of approaches that enable citizens to accessgovernmental information, lodge grievances and receiveredress, oversee the provision of governmental services, andtake an active part in management and decision-makingprocesses. This report aims to review SA mechanisms that arecurrently available in the forestry sector in Moldova andidentify opportunities for improvement.
