【 摘 要 】
This report documents the mainhighlights and findings from the Middle East RegionalSymposium, "Meeting the Public Health Challenges of the21st Century in the Middle East and North Africa/EasternMediterranean Region", held in Beirut in June 2002.The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is currentlyundergoing both epidemiological and demographicaltransitions which are resulting in changing patterns ofmortality and morbidity.Chronic and non-communicablediseases and injuries now account for a growing share of theoverall burden of ill health. Countries of the region arefaced with the challenge of addressing these emerging issueswhile, at the same time trying to complete the unfinishedagenda of addressing diseases and protecting the health ofmothers and children.The book consists of an overviewdrawing on a broad range of presentations at the conference,followed by chapters on specific public health issuesincluding: functions and infrastructures, choosing andfinancing public health services, public health best buys,health promotion, HIV/AIDs, road safety, and strengtheningprimary health care.
