This report discusses the patterns offoreign direct investment flows and trade-investmentinter-linkages in Southern Africa. It will discuss howcross-border investment flows create a possible channel ofgrowth spillover from South Africa and other MICs to LICs inthe subregion, and identify the roles of subregional tradeand investment flows in generating these neighborhoodeffects with LICs.After an introduction with background onthe subregion of Southern Africa, Section 2 provides factson the patterns of trade in Southern African countries toillustrate how much (or little) the Southern Africansubregion is integrated today and whether or notintraregional trade is growing.Section 3 presentsaggregate trends in foreign direct investment flows (andstocks) in SSA, discusses how SASR is situated in suchtrends, and analyzes the emerging trends of intra-SASRcross-border investments, largely driven by South Africa.Section 4 analyzes trade-investment linkages in SouthernAfrica at the firm level. Section 5 discusses areas ofdomestic policies in enhancing trade and foreign directinvestment in Southern Africa.Section 6 summarizes thefindings from this analysis and discusses their policy implications.
