【 摘 要 】
Well-functioning institutions matter foreconomic development. In order to operate effectively, public institutions must also inspire confidence in thosethey serve. The authors use data from the Gallup World Poll,a unique and very large global household survey, to documenta quantitatively large and statistically significantnegative correlation between corruption and confidence inpublic institutions. This suggests an important channelthrough which corruption can inhibit development by erodingconfidence in public institutions. This correlation isrobust to the inclusion of a large set of controls forcountry and respondent-level characteristics, and they showhow it can plausibly be interpreted as reflecting at leastin part a causal effect from corruption to confidence. Theauthors also show that individuals with low confidence ininstitutions exhibit low levels of political participation, show increased tolerance for violent means to achievepolitical ends, and have a greater desire to "vote withtheir feet" through emigration.
