【 摘 要 】
Between 1996 and 2006, Nepal experiencedviolent civil conflict as a consequence of a Maoistinsurgency, which many argue also brought about an increasein female empowerment. This paper exploits variations inexposure to conflict by birth cohort, survey date, anddistrict to estimate the impact of the insurgency oneducation outcomes. Overall conflict intensity, measured byconflict casualties, is associated with an increase infemale educational attainment, whereas abductions byMaoists, which often targeted school children, have thereverse effect. Male schooling tended to increase morerapidly in areas where the fighting was more intense, butthe estimates are smaller in magnitude and more sensitive tospecification than estimates for females. Similar resultsare obtained across different specifications, and robustnesschecks indicate that these findings are not due to selective migration.
