【 摘 要 】
Although good and timely information onagricultural production is critical for policy-decisions,the quality of underlying data is often low and improvingdata quality could have a high payoff. This paper uses datafrom a production diary, administered concurrently with astandard household survey in Uganda to analyze the natureand incidence of responses, the magnitude of differences inreported outcomes, and factors that systematically affectthese. Despite limited central supervision, diaries eliciteda strong response, complemented standard surveys in a numberof respects, and were less affected by problems ofrespondent fatigue than expected. The diary-based estimatesof output value consistently exceeded that from therecall-based production survey, in line with reporteddisposition. Implications for policy and practicaladministration of surveys are drawn out.
