Peru reduced its HIV/AIDS burden by 43percent from 2000 to 2010 due to the introduction of freeantiretroviral drug therapy in 2004, and the successfulexecution of the 2007-2011 HIV/AIDS Strategy and budgetingfor results since 2011. The national HIV program receivedsignificant external support from bilateral andinternational organizations until 2010. The program s shareof domestic public funding has since increasedsubstantially. Since 2011, the Ministry of Finance hasworked to improve allocative efficiency of HIV/AIDS publicfunding for high-risk groups, using budgeting for resultsand transferring resources directly to the Regions. TheHIV/AIDS prevalence in 2010 was estimated at 0.4 percent,below the Latin American and the Caribbean regionalprevalence of 0.5 percent.
