Within this context, there aresignificant opportunities to harness Information andCommunication Technology (ICT) and Open and DistanceLearning (ODL) in teacher education, especially to deliverpre-service teacher education. Consequently, the Governmentof Bihar requested the World Bank to provide support indevelopment of distance education curriculum, relatedsyllabi, content, effective delivery mechanisms, appropriatestudent support systems, and assessment strategies to meetthe needs of its untrained teachers. Many other states andcountries are facing similar problems, and will need toprepare comprehensive time-bound plans for untrainedteachers to acquire the prescribed qualifications (bothacademic and professional). Thus, experiences in Bihar mightprovide models for developing an ICT-based teacher educationsystem that can be used as a useful reference point byothers facing similar problems. This report outlines theseexperiences and shares lessons learned through the processto date.
