【 摘 要 】
This paper reviews empirical findingsfrom economic analyses of the role of gender equality andwomen's empowerment in reducing poverty and stimulatinggrowth. Going beyond the large literature documenting theimpact of female education on a range of developmentoutcomes, the paper presents evidence on the impact ofwomen's access to markets (labor, land, and credit) andwomen's decision-making power within households onpoverty reduction and productivity at the individual andhousehold level. The paper also summarizes evidence fromstudies examining the relationship between gender equalityand poverty reduction and growth at the macro level.Although micro level effects of gender equality onindividual productivity and human development outcomes havebeen well documented and have important ramifications foraggregate economic performance, establishing an empiricalrelationship between gender equality and poverty reductionand growth at the macro level has proven to be morechallenging. The paper concludes by identifying priorityareas for future research.
