【 摘 要 】
This paper introduces a new set offinancial access indicators for 139 countries across theglobe and describes the results of a preliminary analysis ofthis data set. The new data set builds on previous workusing a similar methodology. The new data set featuresbroader country coverage and greater disaggregation by typeof financial product and by type of institution supplyingthe product -- commercial banks, specialized state runsavings and development banks, banks with mutual ownershipstructure (such as cooperatives), and microfinanceinstitutions. The authors use the data set to conduct arough estimation of the number of bank accounts in the world(6.2 billion) as well as the number of banked and unbankedindividuals. In developed countries, they estimate 3.2accounts per adult and 81 percent of adults banked. Bycontrast, in developing countries, they estimate only 0.9accounts per adult and 28 percent banked. In regressionanalysis, they find that measures of development andphysical infrastructure are positively associated with theindicators of deposit account, loan, and branch penetration.
