The creation of new microfinanceinstitutions (greenfielding) is a key International FinanceCorporation (IFC) intervention to increase access to financein countries where there are few institutions serving microand small businesses. IFC uses this approach extensively inAfrica and in post conflict countries, and has supported thecreation of 12 microfinance banks in Sub-Saharan Africa overthe past four years. Another five are in the pipeline. Before 2006, IFC had made a grand total of only fourmicrofinance investments in the region ever. So this programrepresents an extraordinary expansion of IFC'smicrofinance activities in the region. The program'sfocus on greenfielding has enabled the Africa microfinanceteam to identify some key success factors that can beapplied to future projects in Africa and elsewhere.
