The objectives of the gender needsassessment study is to add value to and complement the PostConflict Fund (PCF) supported conflict; and to add to thebody of knowledge regarding women, men and their familiesaffected by the conflict as well as the government'spolicies in addressing this conflict. The century-longstruggle in Thailand's southernmost provinces of Yala,Narathiwas and Pattani broke into open violence in January2004, and has since escalated, involving over 9,000individuals in violence, widowing nearly 1,000 women andorphaning over 1,200 children. The conflict historicallycentered on the relationship between Malayu-speaking Muslimsmajority in the three provinces, and the largely Buddhistnation. The aim of the gender needs assessment is to deepenthe understanding of the conflict situation experienced bymen and women in the southern conflict areas; and to helpidentify appropriate interventions aimed at improving thelives of men and women in conflict situations. This studyhad been undertaken with the explicit purpose of developinga gendered understanding of dimensions of the conflict andthe existing or possible sources of peace and resilience to conflict.
