Historically post offices have played arole in the provision of remittances and basic financialservices to low-income populations. As this function isbeing revived in an increasing number of developing andemerging countries, remittance services can be improved tobetter match financial inclusion goals. This paper describesthe efforts being made in Sub-Saharan Africa to increaseaccess to remittance services through post offices in smalltowns and rural areas, and discusses how this improvedaccess could be used to develop crucial savings and otherfinancial services for the poor. The outcomes areencouraging, though a number of constraints must be removedto fully realize the potential of posts in this area.
