【 摘 要 】
This paper develops a new methodologyfor calculating the "carbon footprint" of airtravel whereby emissions from travel in premium (businessand first) classes depend heavily on the averageclass-specific occupied floor space. Unlike methodscurrently used for the purpose, the approach properlyaccounts for the fact that the relative number of passengerseats in economy and premium classes is endogenous in thelonger term, so adding one additional premium trip crowdsout more than one economy trip on any particular flight. Italso shows how these differences in carbon attributable todifferent classes of travel in a carbon footprintcalculation correspond to how carbon surcharges on differentclasses of travel would differ if carbon emissions frominternational aviation were taxed given a competitiveaviation sector globally. The paper shows how this approachaffects carbon footprint calculations by applying it toWorld Bank staff travel for calendar year 2009.
