The purpose of this Economic Sector Work(ESW) is to: (i) provide a framework to help the governmentanalyze transport sector issues and finalize the update ofthe transport sector strategy; and (ii) identify issues andchallenges that can be addressed through donor fundedoperations. This ESW focuses on roads, air, and porttransport. Transport infrastructure and services have avital role to play in the economic and social development ofthe country. They were designed to facilitate thedistribution and sale of income-generating products, mainlycotton; to promote goods transit towards neighboringcountries; and to facilitate trade between towns and ruralareas, and ensuring access to social infrastructure andservices in the rural area. The formal transport sectorcontributes approximately seven percent of the grossdomestic product (GDP), but its indirect contribution to thecreation of added value is much greater.
