【 摘 要 】
In this paper, the effect of proximityto multinational exporters on the creation of new exportlinkages (the extensive margin of trade) is debated. Usingpanel data from Chinese customs for 1997-2007, the capacityfor Chinese domestic firms to begin exporting new varietiesto new markets is shown to respond positively to the exportactivity of neighboring foreign firms. These spillovers areshown to be product and country specific. This conclusion isrobust to fixed effects and instrumental variablespecifications that control for both supply and demandshocks that could bias the estimations. The impact issizable. The marginal impact of product-country-specificforeign export spillovers is five times as large as theeffect of a 10 percent increase in the demand for theproduct in the destination country. Foreign exportspillovers are also shown to be primarily limited toordinary trade activities. Overall, our findings suggestthat even for a country with an important cost-advantagesuch as China, there is room for initiatives frompolicy-makers that will diffuse best practices regardingexport experience among exporters.
