The Guinea National AgriculturalServices Project's overall development objective is toimprove nationwide agricultural productivity and production,incomes of farmers and food security. Initiated in 1996, thefood security component of this project was undertaken inconjunction with the Food and AgricultureOrganization's Special Program for Food Security(SPFS). SPFS, approved by the FAO Board in June 1994, hadthe objective of helping countries with low revenues and afood deficit to rapidly increase their food production inorder to contribute to food security.The SPFS strategy isbased on pilot projects to identify existing technicalassistance packages and the intensification of theirapplication while eliminating the institutional obstacles totheir adoption. The pilot phase will be followed by anextension of five years during which technical solutions,policies and investment programs will be implemented tostrengthen the national capacity necessary for increasedfood security.
