【 摘 要 】

Of the 1.6 million Haitian youth aged15-24, only 13 percent are content with their lives. Morethan half of 20-year-olds have not completed secondaryeducation and nearly half of youth in the labor market areunemployed. This paper investigates protective and riskfactors predisposing youth to positive and negativebehaviors. These factors, including poverty, gender, education, labor market, migration, family, health, andviolence, are examined by using statistics and probabilitymodels based on Haiti's first household livingconditions survey. Key findings show that female youth needspecial attention because they are more likely than theirmale peers to drop out of school and to be unemployed orinactive. Role models, guidance, expectations, and contactsin the form of parents or household heads are decisivefactors in keeping youth in school, and to some extent, intheir finding employment. In addition, domestic migrationhas a negative impact on the probability of being unemployedor inactive (positive self-selection), while marriage, drugabuse, and domestic violence increase the probability ofdropping out of school.
