【 摘 要 】

The most influential recent work on thedeterminants of civil wars found the factors associated withthe grievance motivation to be largely irrelevant.Ourpaper subjects the results of this empirical work to furtherscrutiny by embedding the study of civil war in a moregeneral analysis of varieties of violent contestation ofpolitical power within the borders of the state. Such anapproach, we argue, will have important implications for howwe think theoretically about the occurrence of domestic waras well as how we specify our empirical tests. In theempirical model, the manifestation of domestic conflictrange from low intensity violence and coups to civil war.Our multinomial specification of domestic conflict supportsthe hypothesis that diversity accentuates distributionalconflict and thus increases the risk of civil war.We alsofind that democracies may be more efficient than autocraciesin reducing the risk of civil war.
