【 摘 要 】
In crisis times, depositors get anxious, can run on banks, and withdraw their deposits. Correlatedwithdrawals of bank deposits could be mitigated if bankdeposits are more diversified, that is, held by moreindividuals. This paper examines the link between thebroader access to bank deposits prior to the 2008 crisis andthe dynamics of bank deposit growth during the crisis, whilecontrolling for relevant covariates. Employing proxies foraccess to deposits and the use of bank deposits, the authorsfind that greater access to bank deposits can make thedeposit funding base of banks more resilient in times offinancial stress. Policy efforts to enhance financialstability should thus not only focus on macroprudentialregulation, but also recognize the positive effect ofbroader access to bank deposits on financial stability.
