【 摘 要 】
The authors document the vast expansionof schooling over the past several decades, as well asconvergence in schooling measures across countries. Theymake the observation that poor countries today have higheraverage education levels than countries at the same level ofeconomic development had in the past. They propose a simplemodel that suggests that these trends can be attributed tothe intertemporal expansion of the world technologicalfrontier, which enhances the demand for schooling. Theirempirical analysis supports the view that educationalexpansion has occurred because of the increase in demand, especially in open economies, and not because ofcost-reducing improvements in the education sector.
