【 摘 要 】
Due to the HIV/AIDS epidemic,sub-Saharan populations are challenged with increasing adultmortality rates that have potentially profound economicimplications. Yet, little is known about the impact of adultdeaths in African households. Using panel data fromTanzania, this paper will explore how prime-age adultmortality impacts the time allocation of surviving householdmembers and the portfolio of household farming activities.Analysis of farm and chore hours across demographic groupsgenerally found small and insignificant changes in laborsupply of individuals in households experiencing a prime-ageadult death. While some farm activities are temporarilyscaled back and wage employment falls after a male death, households did not shift cultivation towards subsistencefood farming and did not appear to have reduced theirdiversification over income sources more than six monthsafter a death.
