After two decades of privatization, hasgovernment ownership and control of enterprises declinedsubstantially? A rigorous assessment is difficult in theabsence of systematic data on state enterprises. But ongoingresearch suggests that while privatization has helped reducethe state's role in some developing countries andregions, in most others the stock of state enterprisesremains relatively large. State enterprises continue to playa major role in many developing regions and, in somesectors, across more or less all of them.
