This short country report, a result oflarger Information for Development Program(infoDev)-supported survey of Information and CommunicationTechnologies (ICT) in education in Africa, provides ageneral overview of current activities and issues related toICT use in education in the country. Madagascar has begun totake steps towards promoting ICTs for development with theadoption of two policies: 1) the national ICT policy in2004; and 2) the economic and social development policy, theMadagascar Action Plan for 2007-2012, which promotes theexpansion of ICT infrastructure and access in the countryincluding the establishment of ICT centers in schools. Thecountry does not have a national ICT policy for education,and the level of access to ICTs including connectivity isrelatively low. There are a few initiatives in the countrythat attempt to promote the access and use of ICTs tosupport learning and teaching, but these largely assume theform of extracurricular projects.
