This short country report, a result oflarger Information for Development Program(infoDev)-supported survey of Information and CommunicationTechnologies (ICT) in education in Africa, provides ageneral overview of current activities and issues related toICT use in education in the country. Mauritania'sapproach to the implementation of ICTs in the educationaland public sectors has been to use the Universite deNouakchott as the focal point of its activities to enhancethe usage of these technologies in the youth and theadministration of the country in future. The university isproviding the leadership, plans, training, and management ofthe entire process. With the growth of the country'soil industry, financial constraints that previously couldhave impeded the country's drive towards itsconnectivity objectives will be reduced; this should help toadvance the rollout of its Internet connectivity andelectrification programmes. Challenges include therelatively low number of secondary schools, andcorresponding low enrolment levels, which adversely impactthe numbers of people who will become computer literate inthe near-term, since the country's educational ICTdevelopment programme focuses mainly on the secondary andtertiary education sectors.
