【 摘 要 】
The author seeks to broaden ourunderstanding of the determinants of student achievementamong East Asian economies using the TIMSS-R data set and,in the process, to remedy some of the ambiguities in theliterature to date. These ambiguities are frequently due tothe sparseness of detailed data on students, teachers, andschools. The TIMSS-R data set offers detailed information onthese variables, which is not typically available from othersources, allowing the author to isolate the impact ofvarious factors affecting student achievement, whilecontrolling for specific characteristics of the students, teachers, and schools surveyed. The results indicate thatthe most consistent factors affecting student performanceare characteristics associated with students (innateabilities and home resources). Moreover, the author does notfind any consistent relationship between the performance ofstudents and school resources or teacher autonomy, both ofwhich are often advocated in the discussion of education reform.
