This short country report, a result oflarger Information for Development Program(infoDev)-supported survey of Information and CommunicationTechnologies (ICT) in education in Africa, provides ageneral overview of current activities and issues related toICT use in education in the country. Leapfrogging is theword most technical people would use to describe theadvancement, at least in infrastructure, that has occurredin Ethiopia in less than 10 years. Even though the countrymay still have one of the lowest tele-densities in thecontinent, there are signs that this situation will soonchange. The WoredaNet, the e-government communicationbackbone, developed by the Ethiopian TelecommunicationCorporation, is a promise and a major enabler for rapid ICTdevelopment in the country. Already the public sector andthe education sector have begun to benefit from thisnetwork, and the health and agriculture sectors have beenlined up for the next phase. With all this and acorresponding ICT for education policy and implementationplan, Ethiopia is set to become a model ICT user on thecontinent. The infrastructure seems to be falling into placeand the policies and strategies are already there. Thechallenge now is for the government to effectivelyco-ordinate the implementation of the strategy.
